Sunrise Destination Elopement Photography in O‘ahu, Hawai‘i¶
Some love stories travel the world before finding their perfect setting. L and S are one of those stories.
S is from Romania and L is from Hawai'i. The two met in Vancouver, British Columbia, and after building their life together there, they eventually moved away. Before officially marrying, they decided to return to Hawai'i for an intimate elopement with their closest family members. It was important to them to keep the celebration small, meaningful and rooted in L's home.
A First Look at Sunrise¶
The day began just before sunrise at Kailua Beach Park, on the east side of O'ahu. Before heading to the shoreline, L and S shared a sweet first look in the car park. It was simple, unpolished and completely genuine. Those quiet seconds before the ceremony felt just as special as the vows themselves.
Although S's family could be there in person, L's family in Romania were unable to travel. They were present throughout the entire ceremony via video call, which was incredibly touching. You can see it in many of the photographs, with phones carefully positioned so that loved ones could witness every vow and every smile. It added such a personal and emotional layer to the morning.
As the sun began to rise, we made our way onto the beach.
The officiant was waiting, and everyone wore beautiful attire that perfectly suited the setting. The light was soft and golden, the air calm, and the ocean stretching endlessly behind them. It was the kind of morning that feels almost unreal.
Their ceremony was intimate and heartfelt. With only close family present and others watching from afar, the focus was entirely on the two of them.
After the vows, we stayed through the full sunrise glow, capturing family photographs and quiet newlywed portraits in the early morning light. The colours were stunning, with golden skies and gentle reflections on the water.
A beautiful rainbow showed up in the horizon.
We then wandered further along the beach, continuing to photograph them as the day slowly brightened.
The change in light gave us a different feel, from soft romance to something a little more vibrant and playful.
Lanikai and a Midday Pause¶
Later in the morning, we moved over to Lanikai Beach.
It was a cloudy morning, but the turquoise water and white sand created a very dramatic backdrop.
Lanikai is known for its breathtaking views and calm waters, and it did not disappoint. We captured a mix of candid moments and relaxed portraits, making the most of the iconic scenery.
After a full and emotional morning, we all welcomed a short break. We headed into Kailua for lunch at Nalu Health Bar. The space has a laid back island atmosphere, with colourful murals and bold artwork, including wave inspired designs that reflect the surf culture of the area. It was a fun and relaxed setting for a few informal photographs, and it gave everyone a moment to breathe and refuel.
As we were planning to head to the next location, we realised that the clouds had gone away, creating a completely different atmosphere. We decided to go back to the beach for a few more pictures.
We also captured some motion blur pictures
Next stop: The Kahala Hotel and Resort!
Kahala and Film Moments¶
Following lunch, we continued the second part of the day at Kahala Beach, near The Kahala Hotel and Resort. The hotel is known for its understated luxury and its prime oceanfront location, offering sweeping views and a peaceful stretch of sand away from the busier areas of Waikīkī. The setting felt calm and refined, which suited the slower pace of the afternoon.
An Evening at Halekulani¶
We ended the day at Halekulani, one of Waikīkī's most iconic oceanfront hotels. With its elegant architecture, white orchids and views across to Diamond Head, it provided the perfect setting for an intimate dinner celebration.
During dinner, we photographed L and S with more of S's extended family, capturing toasts, laughter and the quiet joy that comes after a long and meaningful day. It felt like the perfect conclusion to their elopement. From a sunrise ceremony to an elegant evening meal, the entire day unfolded naturally and beautifully.
It was a long day of shooting, but it never felt rushed. Instead, it felt like we were part of something deeply personal and intentional. L and S chose to celebrate their love in a way that honoured both their story and their families, even those watching from across the world.
An intimate sunrise elopement in Hawai'i, followed by a full day of exploration, celebration and connection. Truly unforgettable.
