A Sunrise Family Session in a Panoramic Lavender Field, Valensole¶
An Early Start for a Calm and Quiet Experience¶
In late June, the I family joined us for a sunrise session from 5:50 to 6:50 in the lavender fields near Valensole. They specifically chose sunrise, which worked perfectly for a family with two young children.
Early mornings mean fewer people in the fields and far fewer distractions, which makes a big difference when photographing small children. Although it requires an early wake up, the calm atmosphere allows everyone to feel more relaxed and focused.
Dawn Light and Deep Purple Tones¶
We began in what we call the “Sunrise Field”. Before the sun came up, during dawn, the lavender appeared especially deep and purple. The tones were cool and rich, and the light was soft and even across the field.
This early phase of the session created a peaceful, almost still atmosphere. The cooler colours gave the images a gentle and intimate feel.
Sunrise Colours: When the Sky Turned Pink and Gold¶
As soon as the sun rose, the entire colour palette shifted. The sky turned pink and orange, and the light warmed dramatically. You can clearly see the contrast between the cooler purple tones of dawn and the warmer pink and orange glow that followed.
The transition between these two lighting moments added beautiful variety to the gallery and gave the session a natural progression in mood and colour.
Capturing the Whole Family, Together and Individually¶
Throughout the hour, we focused primarily on family portraits, as that was their main goal for the session.
We also took solo shots of the two boys, a few couple portraits of mum and dad, and some relaxed candid moments of the boys simply playing and being themselves. These natural interactions always add warmth and personality to a family gallery.
Ending the Morning as a Family of Five¶
At the end, we finished with a few final full family portraits.
For the last picture, we included their dog, who had been patiently waiting nearby.
It was a calm, beautiful summer morning with soft light, happy children, and a full set of meaningful family photographs.
