First Birthday Photo Session and Picnic in Valensole, Provence¶
Date and Timing¶
This session took place on 5 July 2023, in a quiet field between Lavandes Angelvin and the town of Valensole. The family wanted to celebrate their son’s first birthday, and the timing of the shoot was perfect for a late afternoon picnic and mini session. Starting with the picnic and finishing with a short photo session works exceptionally well for families with young children, as it allows them to enjoy the experience without being overwhelmed by too much posing or structured shooting.
The picnic lasted for the first hour of the session, followed by a 30-minute mini shoot during softer evening light. This timing was ideal because it avoided harsh sun while still taking advantage of the natural colours of the lavender fields.
Picnic Setup¶
The picnic portion of the session is always a highlight. This is an example of what the picnic looks like.
We set up a simple yet elegant picnic area, allowing the family to relax, enjoy the birthday treats, and interact naturally. For families with babies or young children, starting with a picnic is ideal because it gives them a chance to settle in and enjoy themselves before the photo session begins.
Photo Session Overview¶
We began the mini session in the first field, which is expansive and quiet, perfect for family portraits. The session started with images of all three together, capturing smiles and natural interactions.
Baby Portraits¶
We then focused on H and baby H, with shots of him being held, walking, and sharing candid moments with his parents. Baby H was in a fantastic mood, which always makes for easier and more joyful photography. There were a mix of posed and candid images, capturing the happiness and connection between the three of them.
Afterwards we took some couples photos of H and H.
Second Field¶
After completing the first half of the session, we moved to the field across the street. The change in scenery was immediate, with the second field offering a different perspective and a beautiful horizon in the background. Here, we took solo shots of baby H, which were fun and playful. The light at this field was softer, giving the images a delicate, almost magical quality.
Styling and Coordination¶
Outfits were casual and comfortable, which worked well for the relaxed, celebratory atmosphere. For families, especially with little children, comfort is key to keeping the day fun and stress-free. The lavender fields provide a vibrant, natural backdrop that makes every photo pop, even with simple styling.
