Our approach to photography in the lavender fields

We specialise in natural, loose editorial-inspired photography with a focus on movement, atmosphere and the landscape itself. We guide clients through the session in a way that feels easy and comfortable with light direction.

We know the Valensole Plateau intimately, having photographed hundreds of lavender sessions there every season since 2020. We know the quieter fields away from the crowds, the locations that catch the light at sunrise and golden hour, and the spots where the rows of purple stretch uninterrupted to the horizon.

Best time for lavender fields photography in Valensole

Each year from mid-June to mid-July, we spend our time on the Valensole Plateau in Provence for the lavender bloom

Harvest dates vary every year, especially with hotter summers and drought conditions becoming more common in Southern France.

For clients travelling specifically for the lavender fields, we always recommend planning sessions during peak bloom often arriving around the last week of June or first two weeks of July.

Sunrise offers soft golden light and peaceful fields with fewer visitors, while sunset creates warm evening light across the lavender rows. Midday sessions reveal the vibrant purple colours that make the Valensole lavender fields so well known throughout France.

Kind Words from our Clients

We got so many amazing photos (hundreds!) it was hard to choose which ones to touch up and print.

My wife and I booked a lavender field shoot with Anita in July 2025. Anita was able to recommend great fields based off the time of year and the lighting conditions that day. Anita and her partner arrived and we had a whirlwind shoot hitting 3 fields in 90 minutes. We got so many amazing photos (hundreds!) it was hard to choose which ones to touch up and print. Anita had everything so well organized, we took all the shots we wanted and everything came out as well as we could have dreamed. This was a top notch experience and I strongly recommend her!

Romantic sunset surprise marriage proposal in Provence; a couple captured in the blooming lavender fields of Valensole, France
They chose the perfect location and timing—sunset over the lavender fields—which gave our photos the most beautiful natural light

We had the absolute pleasure of working with Anita and her partner for our engagement shoot in Valensole, and we couldn’t be happier with the experience. From start to finish, they were incredibly responsive, easy to communicate with, and just genuinely fun to be around. The entire session felt effortless; they focused on capturing candid moments rather than awkward poses, which made us feel completely at ease. The photos turned out stunning. They also did an amazing job with the editing—every photo looks polished yet authentic. We’re beyond happy with how everything turned out and are so grateful they captured such special memories for us. Highly recommend!

Family photography session in the Valensole lavender fields at sunset; a traveling family enjoying a vacation photoshoot in Provence, France
We treat ourselves to professional family photos at least once a year, and Anita and Jean-Claude were among the most professional and skilled photographers we've met!

We loved working with Anita and Jean-Claude for our family photo session in Provence and were exceptionally impressed with their communication, attention to detail, and genuine concern for our satisfaction with the photos and the experience! We were looking forward to a specific lavender field but, unfortunately, it ended up being harvested before our chosen date. They went above and beyond to ensure the replacement location met our needs and wants, and suggested the addition of a gorgeous sunflower field (which added nice variety to our session!). They were also kind, patient with our children, and navigated our big, multi-generational group with ease. If we are lucky enough to find ourselves in Provence or Cote d'Azur again, we will jump at the opportunity to work with Anita and Jean-Claude again! Look no further!

She went above and beyond helping Corey find a lavender field that was available as they were being cut early due to the heat wave

Anita was absolutely amazing and went above and beyond for our proposal photoshoot! The pictures are breathtaking and the shoot was amazing, Anita made us feel so comfortable and captured the moment perfectly. The original location he had planned got harvested early and Anita scouted out locations for us ahead of time and even showed up the morning of the shoot to make sure the field was still available. They also stayed completely hidden and left a marker to show Corey where to go for the proposal discreetly to get the perfect shot. Truly could not say more good things about Anita and would recommend her to anyone!!

A family fulfilling their dream of a lavender field photoshoot on the Valensole Plateau; professional family portraits during a summer trip to Provence
They’re a wonderful husband-and-wife team who each capture photos from different angles, giving us twice as many stunning shots

Absolutely magical experience! I called last minute, and they were incredibly quick to respond and so professional throughout. This has been a dream of mine for years, and they made it even more special. They’re a wonderful husband-and-wife team who each capture photos from different angles, giving us twice as many stunning shots (and of course making it impossible to select favorites, lol) this was by far the most stunning photo session we’ve ever had. The images from the lavender fields are vibrant, timeless, and full of emotion — this day will forever be remembered.

The Lavender Season

When is the best time to visit the lavender fields in Valensole?

Peak bloom is typically around the third week of June through mid-July. Farmers usually begin harvesting in mid-July, though this varies by year and altitude. Due to increasingly common heat waves, seasons have been shortening unfortunately.

We monitor the fields closely each season and can give you realistic updates as your dates approach. If you're flexible on timing, we'll always point you toward the best possible window.

What if I'm visiting in late July or August? Is it too late?

Not necessarily. If you're arriving in late July, the Luberon area between Apt and Lourmarin, or around Gordes near Sénanque Abbey, tends to be harvested later. For visits in August, head to higher-altitude areas like Sault, Banon, or the Drôme. The higher the field, the later the bloom.

What if the lavender isn't fully in bloom yet, or has already been harvested?

This is the trickiest part of planning a lavender session, and we're always honest about it. The bloom window is short and unpredictable, and farmers harvest on their own schedule, sometimes earlier than expected.

We monitor the plateau daily during the season and keep our clients updated as conditions change. If your dates fall outside the peak window, we'll tell you honestly and help you decide whether to adjust timing, explore a different field, or consider whether partial bloom still gives you the images you're hoping for. Some years, even a week's difference can change everything.

Are there other flower fields near Valensole too?

Yes! The area around Valensole is also well known for sunflower fields, which bloom around the same time as the lavender. The combination makes for spectacular photography. There are sage fields and olive trees too!

Getting There

What is the best way to get to Valensole?

The easiest option is to fly into Marseille and hire a car. The drive takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours depending on traffic. You can also drive from Nice, which takes roughly 2 to 2.5 hours. A hire car is strongly recommended as taxis and rideshares are limited and expensive in this area, and many of the most beautiful villages are only accessible by road.

Can I get to Valensole without a car?

Yes, though it takes considerably longer. From Marseille, you can take the ZOU bus (lines 65 or 69) to Manosque for just €2, then take the DLVA 133 bus or a taxi (around €50) to the fields. From Nice, expect the journey to take upwards of six hours each way using a combination of trains and buses.

Where should I stay?

Staying in the town of Valensole itself is ideal— it's only a five-minute drive to Lavandes Angelvin, one of the most popular fields, and you can reach other fields on the plateau within 20 minutes. If you prefer not to hire a car, Manosque is the closest city with good transit links and is a comfortable base.

Do you provide transportation for photo sessions?

If we don't have another photo session booked around your slot, we're happy to pick you up for a fee. Please let us know if you need a ride and we're happy to discuss it!

Planning Your Session

How far in advance should I book?

As early as possible, ideally several months before the season. Lavender sessions are among our most in-demand bookings each year, and the best sunrise slots during peak bloom fill up quickly. If you have a specific date or event in mind (a proposal, an anniversary, a wedding in Provence), we'd encourage you to reach out as soon as your travel is confirmed.

That said, if you're planning closer to the season and we still have availability, reach out and we'll do our best to make it work.

What types of sessions do you offer in the lavender fields?

  • Proposals: The lavender fields are one of the most beautiful and romantic proposal settings in the world. We'll handle everything; positioning, timing, staying hidden, so the moment is completely genuine.
  • Couples sessions: A relaxed portrait session among the rows, guided by us at whatever pace feels natural to you.
  • Elopements: For couples who want to exchange vows or mark a milestone somewhere unforgettable. We can help you plan the full day.
  • Weddings: If you're planning a Provence wedding and want to include a lavender field segment, we can incorporate this into your full-day coverage.
  • Family sessions: The lavender makes for a stunning and joyful backdrop for family portraits, especially with young children.
  • Maternity sessions: The lavender fields create a soft and timeless setting for capturing this special chapter in your life.
  • Picnic experiences: We offer a picnic and photography experience, which includes fresh local produce and a dedicated photo session so you can take home lasting memories of the fields.
  • Night-Sky sessions: Night Sky sessions are ideal for couples or anyone who can stay still, as we often use longer shutter speeds to capture the delicate colours and texture of the lavender. The early light creates an almost ethereal atmosphere, bringing out deep, rich purples in the lavender.

What is the best time of day to shoot in the lavender?

Sunrise is one of our favourite times to shoot, the light is warm and directional, the air is still cool, and it's so magical to have the rows almost entirely to yourselves.

Golden hour in the evening is beautiful too. The light softens, and the golden sunlight pours over the fields creating a warm, dreamy atmosphere across the lavender.

What should we wear?

We generally recommend softer, natural tones or pastels. Creams, whites, soft blues, sage greens, warm tans complement the purple of the lavender rather than compete with it. Avoid very busy patterns or bright neons, which can distract from the landscape.

Comfort matters too. The fields are uneven rocky terrain and the paths between rows are narrow. Flat or low-heeled shoes are much more practical than heels, especially at sunrise when the ground may still be damp. Flowing dresses or linen trousers tend to photograph beautifully in the breeze.

We're always happy to give more tailored advice once we know your vision for the session.

What if it rains or the weather is bad on the day?

We monitor the forecast closely in the days before your session and will communicate any concerns early.

If conditions are genuinely poor on the morning of your session, we'll discuss rescheduling to another available slot. Given how short the bloom window is, we always try to find a solution rather than simply cancel. Light cloud cover can produce beautifully soft and even light, some of our favourite lavender images have been shot under an overcast sky.

Are there bees in the lavender fields?

Yes, there are plenty of bees, but they're most active roughly from an hour after sunrise until an hour before sunset. That said, having done photo sessions in the fields all day over many seasons, we've never been stung. The bees are very focused on the lavender and generally unbothered by people.

Exploring the Valensole Region

What else is there to do near Valensole besides the lavender fields?

So much. The Luberon region nearby is full of stunning villages such as Gordes, Roussillon, Bonnieux, Ménerbes, and Lourmarin. The Gorges du Verdon is a spectacular natural canyon about 25 kilometres long with turquoise waters, well worth a detour where you can spend the day on the turquoise water. In Manosque, the original l'Occitane factory offers guided tours of the production facilities, Mediterranean garden, and boutique museum.

Is it worth visiting the town of Valensole itself?

Absolutely. It's often overlooked, but the town is picturesque and genuinely charming. It has a lovely 11th-century church, a 17th-century château, local art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants serving Provençal cuisine. It makes for a lovely afternoon or a stop for lunch away from the fields. We highly recommend trying local specialties such as lavender honey or lavender ice cream.

Your Gallery

How many photos will we receive?

For a standard couples or proposal session (1 hour), you can expect a curated gallery of 20 professionally edited images. For longer sessions that number grows accordingly. All unedited RAW files are also provided if you'd like them.

When will we receive our gallery?

We aim to deliver your full edited gallery within 2–3 weeks of your session. We also send a small selection of quick edits for a proposal within 24–48 hours so you have photos to share straight away.

How will we receive our photos?

Through a private, online gallery shared on our website. From there you can view, download, and share your images at full resolution with as many people as you like.

Can we print the photos ourselves?

Yes, absolutely. You have full printing rights for personal use and are free to print wherever you choose.

Additional Information about the Lavender Fields in Provence

The lavender fields of Provence are one of the most iconic landscapes in the south of France, drawing visitors from around the world each summer. Between mid-June and mid-July, the Valensole Plateau transforms into vast waves of purple stretching across rolling farmland, creating a scenery that feels almost surreal. This is the heart of Provence lavender production, where the scent of blooming lavender fills the air and the countryside becomes a photographer's dream. The best time to visit is during peak bloom in late June to early July, before the harvest begins and the fields are cut for essential oils, soaps, and perfumes.

Valensole Plateau and the Most Famous Lavender Fields

The Valensole region is home to some of the most photographed lavender fields in France, including Lavandes Angelvin and Terraroma. These family-run farms are known for their perfectly aligned rows of lavender and wide open views of the Provençal countryside. Lavandes Angelvin, located just minutes from the town of Valensole, is especially popular at sunset when golden light enhances the purple tones of the fields. Terraroma offers a unique contrast with nearby sunflower fields, creating vibrant combinations of yellow and purple during the summer season.

Beyond the well-known farms, smaller and quieter locations such as Route de Puimoisson, Route de Manosque, Chemin de Riou, and Route Départementale 8 provide a more peaceful experience. These lesser-known fields are ideal for photography, offering rolling hills, olive trees, and uninterrupted views of the lavender landscape. Some areas even feature dramatic dips in the terrain or rustic farm structures that add character to the scenery, making each field feel slightly different from the next.

The Charm of the Luberon Valley Villages

Just beyond the lavender fields lies the Luberon Valley, a region filled with some of the most beautiful villages in Provence. Gordes stands out as one of the most famous hilltop villages, known for its stone architecture and panoramic views, while the nearby Sénanque Abbey is surrounded by lavender fields that create one of the most iconic scenes in the region. Roussillon offers a completely different visual experience with its rich ochre cliffs and warm red-orange buildings, especially along the Sentier des Ocres walking trail. Other villages such as Ménerbes, Bonnieux, Lourmarin, Joucas, and Oppède-le-Vieux each bring their own charm, with narrow streets, historic buildings, and sweeping views over vineyards and valleys.

Natural Landscapes and Nearby Attractions

Beyond villages and lavender fields, Provence also offers dramatic natural scenery such as the Gorges du Verdon. This massive canyon, carved by the Verdon River, features turquoise waters surrounded by steep limestone cliffs and is one of the most impressive natural wonders in Europe. The contrast between the calm lavender fields and the dramatic canyon landscapes shows the diversity of the region.

A Timeless Summer Experience in Provence

Visiting the lavender fields of Provence is more than just a seasonal trip—it is an immersive experience of colour, scent, and landscape. From the endless purple rows of Valensole to the historic villages of the Luberon and the natural beauty of the Verdon Gorge, the region offers an unforgettable journey through some of the most picturesque scenery in France.
